Safety Tips for our School ChildrenSubmitted by catherinew Mon, 18 Aug 2008
The first day of school can be pretty chaotic for families more so if the kids are going to school for the first time. Older students may not be new to the routine but just the same they will be apprehensive of meeting new classmates, making new friends and coping with the demands of new teachers if they have to move to a new educational institution. The whole family will have to face new adjustments regarding time schedules as well as additional expenses. On top of it all, the adults will be concerned with the security of the students while in school. Research conducted shows that children at the age of 8 to 14 have the most school related injuries. However, most adults are still concerned about the violence that can happen inside the school.
Aside from the injuries that can be caused by the natural boisterousness of students, parents are most concerned about more violent incidents like child abductions and sexual harassments. The parents fears are justified as they are entrusting their kids to educational employees and it can be expected that these people can only protect the kids while they are inside the school premises. The school organization should make the necessary measures to ensure security against damage to school assets through larceny but the security of the faculty and the educational institution kids must be given top priority. The location of the educational institution is one consideration in setting up security measures. Basically, educational institutions in isolated locations will be relatively safe from unwelcome “visitors” unlike schools in well populated areas. A school on a suitable location is not an excuse for the educational institution organization to be complacent about creating a safe surrounding. There are two basic measures that a educational institution can take to ensure a safe surrounding. Since violence in educational institutions are most often attributed to unwelcome visitors or intruders, the identification system that the school requires will ensure that unauthorized people are prevented from entering the educational institution premises. Much has been written about abductions that happened on school grounds, about gang wars that have snuffed the lives of innocent school children All these things could have been prevented if only the people who have committed these violent acts were prevented from entering the school premises. First and foremost, an id card system is used to strengthen security measures. However, development in technology makes it possible for school organizations to use a multifunction identification card. These cards are used to gain access to secured areas, for computer log-ins as well as cashless food vending. Another important factor in creating a safe environment is educating the kids as well as the faculty to be safety conscious. This factor is often neglected. At times this is intentionally overlooked due to the fact that educational institution heads would not want to overemphasize on the fear factor. However, educating the students and the faculty as well on what to do, whom to ask for help and where to ask for help when a situation that is not supposed to happen is happening can be the basic solution that can control a violent incident from happening.
