ABC California Liquor License

California has one of the largest populations in the nation and, if it were a country, California would rank among the top ten economies globally. With it's 58 counties, almost 39 million residents and 840 miles of coastline, California has no lack of innovation, beauty and opportunity. Another area in which California consistently ranks highly is in it's fine dining. From San Francisco to San Diego, top-notch restaurants are abundant. And along with fine food you can also find excellent wines. It is estimated that 90% of all US wine is produced in California.

Now, while most people know that opening a dining facility can be time consuming and costly, few people know about the CA liquor licensing commission called the Alcoholic Beverage Control department. This is the state agency responsible for making sure that licensees are qualified to operate with a beer & wine license, called an on-sale general type 41, or with a full a liquor license. which is designated as an on-sale general type 47.

In order to be granted either license type, applicants must go through a comprehensive process which includes an on-site survey by a state investigator as well as an FBI background check with fingerprinting. In addition to issuing the licenses, the liquor control board is also charged with overseeing the approximately 65,000 licenses that cover almost every conceivable type of business from airplanes to zoos and everything in between.

So the next time you see a poster announcing that a restaurant proprietor is in the process of applying for the right to sell the public alcoholic beverages, keep in mind that in addition to the many required business licenses such as health department, building and safety and entertainment permits, they have also been thoroughly vetted before being able to get a liquor license California approval.
