Curtains to suit your windows

I’ll bet that there aren’t that many of us who have ever given much thought to the fast paced world of the curtain fashion industry. Few of us know of the thrill and excitement of new, experimental window treatments, and the curious adrenalin rush of exotic paint colours emerging. The creative use of accessories and unusual combinations of materials can result in imaginative curtain designs that help to stamp your unique signature on your house and make it your home.

Changing your kitchen curtains is the quickest and most affordable way to redecorate your kitchen. New curtains in your kitchen automatically give the room a new feel and flavour. They can lighten the room, brighten the room and give it more depth and character. A helpful hint to consider is to try and match your curtains with your floor or walls, as this will enhance the colours of the room. In addition, your kitchen will seem more homely and inviting. There are curtain styles available that only cover the bottom half of the window and have toppers to cover the top half. The bottom half comes with ties that can hold it back in swag fashion, which lets in more sun and warmth while still retaining privacy.

In curtain terms, swag refers to the manner in which curtains are pulled to the sides of windows, about midway in their length. A draw back tie is looped around the curtains and is attached to a hook on the window frame, thus securing the curtains with the tops joined and the bottoms hanging freely. When released, the curtains close completely.

Another room that benefits from this cost effective method of redecoration is the bathroom. An additional benefit to having a curtain in your bathroom is a little extra privacy, as the shadows shown through the frosted glass are eliminated. Bathroom curtains come in a variety of fabrics including 100% polyester window treatments that have a water repellent finish and are mildew resistant. Once your curtains are installed, you can have fun picking out other bathroom accessories such as mats, shower curtains and towel racks to match.

When it comes to your lounge or any other large rooms, the style of your curtains will decide the look of the room. The type of furniture that you have also plays an important role in the type of curtains that you choose. Small tables and sharp angles might require a mini blind to cover the window along with side panel curtains tied off swag style to add a splash of colour. Large furniture may need a larger blind, but the same basic idea stands for curtains.

In a bedroom you would usually use room darkening shades, as well as rod curtains, which are simple and inexpensive to make. One of the convenient things about rod curtains is that when you get tired of your colour scheme and want to make a change, it is easy to make new curtains to match your new bedding and painted walls.

Buying curtains can be more complicated than simply getting the length right and hoping that the colour will blend in well enough with your current scheme. The items to consider and remember are vast and varied, but ultimately it comes down to a reflection of your style and preference. If that means that the scarlet curtains with the pink and yellow spots are going in the navy blue lounge with the lime green furniture, so be it.
