Graduates entering the workforce as trainees get a number of benefits from their employer. The most obvious benefit to the graduate trainee is confidence, as a corporation chose a few graduates from a larger pool in an effort to develop a talented group of workers. As well, graduate trainees need to take advantage of the benefit of patience, which corporations are demonstrating by using course work and job shadowing to help graduate trainees get up to speed. Finally, graduate trainees need to understand that even the most mundane tasks during their training period are tests of their abilities as professionals.

All of these benefits make for a great tool kit for success in the professional world. Graduate trainees learn quickly that they can go from promising young worker to valued full time employee in a few weeks, depending on the industry and the need for such workers. As such, the graduate trainee that demonstrates the ability to shift from one task to another without missing a beat is likely to move upward within the company. Graduate trainees need to understand that training sessions are multifaceted and challenging in order to assess a trainee’s ability to deal with dynamic situations. Those who pass will move into management positions while others may move onto other jobs or professions.

Graduate trainees also need to use the skills they learned in university settings as a compliment to the skills learned in training. Business graduates, for example, may understand fully the economic issues associated with the particular industry they are involved within. In order to be effective in their move from trainee to employee, a graduate needs to mix this academic knowledge with the company-specific knowledge taught to them in training. In essence, the graduate trainee who can be assimilate various sources of information will succeed in their future job.

Finally, the aforementioned tool of confidence needs to be used liberally by graduate trainees. Confidence breeds an ease of communication that is vital in the workplace. Graduate trainees can also establish trust with clients by utilizing their confidence, as they can speak authoritatively about products and services without wondering if they got a piece of information wrong. Finally, confidence is an important tool for potential managers and executives. Leadership comes from a combination of experience, confidence, and knowledge. The trainee who is able to utilize all three of these tools will be able to claim high on the corporate ladder.
