Refining The Graduate Job Search

Submitted by deaott

Graduates throughout the United Kingdom understand how difficult it can be to find a job. Many students approaching graduation begin their job hunt early, only to learn that employers are looking for university graduates with degrees in hand. However, the task can more difficult for new graduates, who don’t have the substantive experience or industry knowledge to land great jobs right away. Instead of continuing a failing search for a job, UK graduates should focus on refining their graduate job search to maximise their time and decrease frustration.

Everyone in the job market knows how tough it can be to find a job after graduation. However, many graduates are often unaware of their abilities and how to sell them to potential employers. As such, the first step toward a refined job search is to create an inventory of strengths, weaknesses, and talents that can help focus a graduate. For example, an inventory may include a list of strengths, weaknesses, and talents with supporting experience next to each listing. In this way, a graduate knows what they have to offer before they apply to jobs and interview.

After creating a personal inventory, graduates can move onto filling out applications and working on the CV. Applications vary from business to business but there are a few standard items. Graduates need to understand that filling out applications completely is important. An incomplete application helps an employer weed out applicants who don’t have a strong attention to detail. A complete work history, ample references, and a completed section on education can go a long way toward landing an interview.

Graduates also need to review their CV before submitting it to employing companies. After all, the CV is a calling card for the graduate and the first point of contact between an employer and a potential employee. The CV should be relatively short, no longer than two pages, with concise sentences that explain why a graduate should be considered for a job. This document should only include the most vital details for professional consideration, including applicable experience and personal interests.

Finally, graduates are ready to send out application materials. However, graduates need to know the best places to find potential jobs. The two best resources are online job sites and recruiting agencies. Job sites offer a quick way to send out a lot of applications, allowing a busy graduate the opportunity to get their name out to more companies. A recruiting agency, when combined with an online job site, can help market an exceptional graduate to more employers than any other method of job hunting.
