So, you’ve found that special person, your soul-mate, your other half. You both know it, but you want an outward sign to let the rest of the world know about your commitment. A ring has always been the accepted way. A token of your love, a constant reminder of the bond between you, and a sign to others that you are “taken”.

Although traditionally a plain gold band, the wedding ring now comes in a huge variety of materials and styles.

Gold and platinum are the traditional metals for wedding rings, but you will also find rings made from, silver, titanium and stainless steel. Each metal has it’s advantages and disadvantages. A good independent jeweller will be happy to advise you on their relative merits.

In addition to it’s symbolism, these days the ring is also a reflection of your personal style. Whether you have a clear idea of the ring you want or you are just hoping to stumble across a ring that will appeal to you, you may not find what you are looking for in a High-Street jewellers. You might like to consider having a ring designed and made just for you. A jewellery designer can create a unique ring to your individual specifications. You can supply a finished design for the jeweller to work from, or ask him or her to come up with some ideas for you to consider.

When choosing your ring, look for a design you will be happy to live with for the rest of your life, and don’t forget to make sure you go for something that is durable enough to stand up to a lifetime of wear and tear.

Beyond that, just have fun looking. Try on lots of different rings. The style you have always imagined you would go for, could look completely wrong on your finger. When you find your perfect ring you will just know it.
