Four Easy Steps for Small Business Server Migration

Submitted by ashishjuneja

With the launch of Microsoft's SBS Server 2008, more and more people start installing it in migration mode, hopefully with positive results. But some people aren't lucky and they face problem during SBS migrations. For beginners, read the following steps and know how to do things.

1) Plan Ahead. Schedule at least 1 week for SBS migration. If it's a small customer with bit information on the server and no programs to migrate, installing on Monday to Friday may work. Be flexible and do one at a time. Back to the main point, installing on Monday, moving email Tuesday, programs Wednesday, finishing the AD/SBS incorporated programs Thursday, and taking the server offline Friday works well.
2) Migrate slow and steady wins the race. Usually, we found that trying to rush is a good way to kill yourself with problems. It's not that you plan to have problems with the migration; you should plan to have problems with people. Where a normal problem may get ignored most of the time, when you are migrating they will tell you about every small thing. It's always good to have server room with a locked door. Going slowly will make it easy to solve the real problems from the fear. Plus giving yourself extra time means you aren't stressing while moving mailboxes doesn't move a few.
3) Don't try to make it better immediately! Doing a migration is not the time to improve your existing network. Don't install the new firewall when you move your email. You are just asking for problems. Do the firewall, ensure it works, do the migration.
4) Finish up and let it run. Once you over, let people work for a minimum 1 week before start doing more.

Above mentioned four steps are effective and easy to follow that will assist you do SBS migration successfully. If you don't have any dedicated team for migrating server, consult a specific company that will provide complete SBS help and support.

SBS-Techs, a leading name aligned with Microsoft SBS Support, provide complete SBS help and support for your SBS migration.
