Spirit AeroSystems, Inc., based in Wichita, Kansas, is the world's largest aero structures manufacturer. The company builds several important pieces of Boeing aircraft, including the fuselage of the 737, portions of the 787 fuselage, and the cockpit of nearly all of its airliners. It was spun off of Boeing Corporation when Boeing sold its Wichita division to the investment firm Onex. In 1992, Textron Inc. bought Cessna. The defense contractor, Raytheon also had a large plant in Kansas, which was sold to a partnership formed by Toronto-based Onex and Wall Street investment bank Goldman Sachs. The $3.3 billion deal creates Hawker Beechcraft Corp. and includes Raytheon facilities in Salina, KS.
The University of Kansas is a large public university system with campuses in Lawrence, Edwards, and its Medical Center in Kansas City, KS, with a system total of 27,000 students. KU Med, in Kansas City is a medical school with an attached hospital.
