More about transformers and its testing

Submitted by Ron

The two most familiar types of transformers in the market are linear transformer and switch mode power transformer. The designs of the transformer are different. At times it is referred as an ac transformer. Linear transformer generally are used in radio, project kits, VCD and many other things while switch mode transformer can be set up only in things like Monitor, TV, Fax and so on.

A transformer comprises of two or more coils wounded on the same core. For power transformers, the core material which is generally used is iron. The core material which is used for a radio-frequency transformer is generally ferrite. The fundamental property of a transformer is to transform AC voltage. A transformer is not able to change the direct current voltage. The transformer lamination or covering of shellac, enamel or polish is to protect nearby turns from shorts connecting winding.

How to test transformers:
Transformer breakdown are comparatively a very rare case in the majority of electronic tools, when compared to other components. If a lot of current passes through a coil or winding, the winding heated up very soon and may also open up completely, or the insulation connecting the turns of wire can stop working, reasoning the coil to be partially or completely shorted.

Identical to a coil, you be able to test out the stability of every primary or secondary transformer winding. The real value of DC resistance you study is to a certain extent worthless, but in any case you will make out if whether the winding is open. Testing out a linear transformer is quite uncomplicated. When the ac voltage is applied to the primary winding and it is looking forward for the output voltage on the secondary side. No output voltage states that the winding of the transformer has open. Try to find any evidence of overheating, for instance, dark or blackened areas or a burning smell.

With reference to how to test a power transformer-it is a bit problematical. In this case you will not be able to apply ac voltage to the equipment and look forward to the wanted or needed output at the secondary side without attaching to load or else over power will take place as you have removed all the secondary load and will blow the control section which comprise of power fet, pwm ic and etc..

The most excellent way to check a switch mode power transformer is initially take it out from the board. Test out just the primary winding as secondary winding breakdown is exceptionally rare. How do we be acquainted with which is the primary winding? Mark out from the large filter cap the positive pin to make out where the circuits go. Transformer repair is not simple and it necessitates an excellent skill to do it.
