Printing What We Want To SaySubmitted by galaxywd
Some of the most heated debates and upheavals in many countries have been because of people wanting to have their freedom of speech and in many cases, freedom of the press. The printing press brought with it the ability to spread the word about almost anything imaginable. That was also a problem for some people because many times what was being printed went against them or expressed truths or views that some did not agree with or did not wish to be known.
Even though in our country we often take freedom of speech and the freedom of the press for granted, there are still other places in the world where it is not unlikely to be put to death for either saying or printing things that are deemed off limits by those who are in charge. People in these parts of the world are doing the same thing that we did in our country so many years ago. They are dying for the right to express their views and opinions. They are dying to tell the truth as they see it. Almost anyone you ask will usually agree that having the right to freedom of speech and of the press is a wonderful thing that everyone should have. Then there are others who might have turned out to be the victim of some malicious talk or print that could disagree. In our zest to print and tell the truth, sometimes there can be innocent people that are gravely affected by what is said or written. Tabloid magazines are a great example of this. When we abuse our right to freedom of speech and press and begin to use it in a destructive manner, it somehow cheapens the right we have been given. It is ultimately up to each individual to weigh carefully exactly what it is that we use these rights for. They can either be used for the pursuit of goodness or for the evil of personal gains while possibly destroying the life of someone else in the process. Of course, those who can be inadvertently affected by some of the terrible things that can be said or printed about them has the right to sue the publisher or speaker, it can rarely undo the damage that might have been done to that individual. It is important that we use the glorious rights of freedom of speech and of the press for the reasons that they were intended, to promote truth and knowledge for the benefit of ourselves and others.
