The Printed Words In Our Life

Submitted by galaxywd
Mon, 9 Jun 2008

Since the early beginnings of the printed word, even those that were etched on a stone or on the walls of great historical places, writings have been affecting us in many ways. After sheep skins and parchments were used to write words on, it became more prevalent to be able to read for some, but not all. Until this day there are still millions of people who can not read even in their own language.

For those of us who live in this country, in this time, reading things that have been printed is a daily part of our lives. It would be so difficult to make it through a single day if we could not read all the multitudes of writing that bombard us from every side in our culture. Most of the time, we do not give a second thought to reading things that have been printed, we just do it as we go along, almost like breathing it is so much a part of us. It is unavoidable to not read anymore because it would appear that we need written instructions for doing so many things.

When we get up in the morning, many of us start our day reading the morning news paper. Some of us choose to get our news from television, but even this provides us with plenty of things to read as we listen too. As soon as we get in our cars to drive to work or anywhere else, we may have to read the time on the clock or the station guide on our radio. No sooner than we back out of our driveway we will have to either consciously or unconsciously read road signs that are along our way.

Once we get to work, there is usually something to read somewhere. Sometimes it can be directly related to our work and sometimes it could just be the magazine we choose to read on a break. At the end of our day as we make our way home, there is more reading along the way.

So much of what we do requires reading things that have been printed by one method or another. Road signs are printed one way, books, magazines, and papers, another. Any time we buy something that must be assembled, there are usually instructions that have been printed somewhere. If we choose not to read them, it is because we have some weird idea that we do not need them, but ultimately we will end up retrieving the instructions to read exactly where we went wrong in the assembly process.
