To run any business, you firstly need to make sure you have adequate and proper tools to do the job. While this may sound obvious, it's not as straightforward as you might think, and any business that doesn't take on board the necessary tools of the trade, might find they experience difficulties with professionalism or with maintaining a well run operation. Home business owners are not exempt from this rule, and it's important that you too appreciate what business equipment you require when considering starting a business at home.

The first most significant piece of equipment you'll need to run a work at home business is an office - an actual physical place in which you can carry out the operations and administration of your business. Initially, you might think it possible to work from the dining room, kitchen, lounge or from your bedroom, but ultimately if your business does not have its own space within your home; it will create problems with other family members.

An area that allows you to escape from family members or other distractions so you can get on with the work at hand is a must. If you want to work from home, you have got to have some way of distinguishing between play and work, and this can be intensely difficult without some physical partition.

Another key thing to consider when starting a work from home business is the physical equipment you'll need. You will definitely need a laptop or desktop computer with a broadband internet connection. A printer, photocopier and a scanner are also essential.

Another definite requirement is a separate telephone line. Ask your telecoms operator to give you the call forwarding function so that you can divert the call to your mobile when you are out and about meeting clients.

A fax machine is useful but not a hundred percent necessary. It is a good idea to buy an all in one cordless phone and fax machine that works of the same line without having to change or unplug cables from the socket.

A franking machine is very handy and not as expensive as you might think. In the long run you will actually save money, labour and time driving to and from the post office to buy stamps.

While working from home saves on the cost of renting or buying office space, do not begrudge spending money on the appropriate equipment to achieve your business aims.

Finally, you should also consider the furniture requirements of your home office. A proper desk and chair will make life easier. You must also have adequate storage for keeping financial records and other paperwork. At least one filing cabinet and maybe two will be necessary to store files, quotations and brochures on a day to day business. These should also be purchased from the start to ensure there are minimal obstacles to getting your new business of the ground.

Running a business from home requires as much office equipment as running a regular business especially considering that you are likely to have less space to store all your stuff. In order to launch your home business properly, it's important that you recognise this fact and approach this in a professional manner, to ensure you don't have to compromise if and when the workload starts to intensify.
