Writing Your Goals

Submitted by sheri
Thu, 31 Jan 2008

Everyone seems to be talking about having goals. Actually what is a goal? How do I go about reaching my goals? How do I create a goal?

The definition of a goal is "the purpose toward which an endeavor is directed: an objective. "It also states a synonym as "intention". By using the word intention, a goal may not seem as foreboding. When we put our attention on our intentions, we can evaluate what it is we actually want. Ask yourself "What do I want to accomplish during the day"? An answer might be "I want to write a report for my boss that he requested". Bam; you have just created a goal. This may seem over simplified, but it can be simple. This process does not have to be a difficult and complicated task.

Here is a simple way to start creating your goals. First, put yourself in a comfortable and quiet environment where you can relax. Look out the window if you have one and just day dream. Day dream like you did when you were a kid staring off into space thinking about being an astronaut or a famous model. Now dream about the things you really want but may seem out of reach for about a half hour or so. You may not want to stop because this can be so much fun. This process is the first and most important process in achieving your goals. We sometimes get so absorbed in the "have to" that we forget about the "want to" or our dreams and desires. What was the main thing you thought about when you were daydreaming? A new home? A fast car? Family Vacation? Wealth? Health? Love? It can be anything that you desire. If all you thought about was how much you hate your job or can't wait to get a divorce, you may want to go back and dream again. This is not about what you DON'T want - it is about what you DO want. I want a job that I enjoy and feel accomplished at or I want to have a marriage that is happy and fulfilling and based on trust, love and respect.

Start simple. You don't have to figure out how you are going achieve this; you just have to know that you desire this. Our mind is an amazing machine; it tells us not to step in front of a moving car (this usually is just a very loud internal voice saying don't step out). It also tells us what we think about ourselves (usually a much quieter voice). Which voice to do think is more persistent and consistent but much less noticeable. Which voice do we hear the loudest and listen to the most. This is why and how the way we write our goals is so important. We want to be able to HEAR our goals consistently.

So after our daydreaming, we now have a goals or a series of goals. Do we just wish them into reality? I don't think so. We have to put our attention toward our intentions to give them power. Now let's get specific on how to write our goals.

1. Be specific. Know what you want. How can you expect to achieve it if you don't know exactly what it is you desire. Now imagine what it is like after you have received it. What does it FEEL like? Can you feel the speed of the new car as you drive around the mountain curves? What does it LOOK like? Can you see the fabulous view of the ocean in your new home? It is important to feel the emotions of what it would be like when you get what you want. This may require more daydreaming; go back to situations where you did get what you want and remember that feeling.
2 .Measureable. How do you know that you have achieved it? What was the end result? Did it make a difference in your life? How would you measure the success?
3. Attainable. A 70 yr. old woman may not be able to become a famous model. Be sure your goals are attainable at some point in time. You don't want to set yourself up for disappointment. We do have the ability to achieve amazing things so set your sights high rather than low. Why not achieve the highest and the best.
4. Risky. Risky vs. realism. Our personal view of realism is sometimes exactly what holds us back from achievement. Go for the risky. Step out of yourself - out of your comfort zone. Don't let people dissuade you from your beliefs no matter what. Believe you can achieve what you want.
5. Time and action. Put a time limit on when you want to achieve your goal. Without a time limit, it is endless and you will never have completion. It will always be "tomorrow or some day". Be specific on the date you plan on attaining your goal. Now you know what you want, you need to create action. An action taken in the direction of what you want. Start with achieving small things first and create a habit of obtaining success. Then move forward to bigger and longer goals to accomplish. Always keep in mind the big picture of what you want. Little steps may have to be accomplished before reaching the big picture. Never give up. Winners are not quitters - quitters are not winners. However, winners are not people sitting on their sofas waiting for their dreams to come true either. They go for it with everything they have.

Now to summarize; dream it - write it down as a statement of fact that it has been received - put your emotions and actions into it - see it - and receive it. A goal can be achieved in a very short period of time or longer if your attentions are not set directly on your goals. Every day visualize of what you want and how you will feel when you get it.

Remember it is a given fact that when you write your goals down you achieve them 20 more if you write them down and then share them with another.

So start now by creating the life that you dream of. It does not have to stay a dream. It can be reality.
