Your Texas Business- From Cattle to Computer Chips

Submitted by eastbiz
Sun, 10 Jun 2007

Texas is the second largest state by area, and recently also the second largest by population with 23.5 million people. The largest part of the state’s people lives in the Dallas–Fort Worth or Houston metropolitan areas. Also San Antonio, Texas has over 1 million people. Houston has a population of 2 million, and 5.5 million in its metropolitan area. Sports fans all over the world know Houston for its Astrodome, built in the 1970s as the first domed sports stadium in the world. Leading companies in Houston include Marathon Oil, a worldwide oil and natural gas exploration company. It also has refineries in Texas City, Texas. Schlumberger is an international oil exploration services company headquartered in Houston. It is involved with everything from drilling and maintaining oil wells, to information technology. With Schlumberger’s joint venture with Smith Co., they also created a large venture in the use of drilling fluids, to force greater quantities of oil and gas out of drilling holes. These are just a few ideas for your Texas Incorporation. Another Houston company of note is Halliburton
Corporation and its subsidiary KBR. KBR has been involved in construction projects all over the world, especially of refineries, and chemical plants. Halliburton has been involved in a large number of war-zone contracts for the U.S. Government from Iraq to the Balkans.
Texas is a major agricultural state with the largest cattle herds in the nation. It is also a major producer of cottons and wheat. Texas has no personal state income tax, generally low taxation and limited regulation of business. It is also a center for oil and natural gas production.

The Texas economy today relies largely on information technology, computers, oil and natural gas, and fuel processing. Aerospace and defense manufacturing is primarily centered within the Dallas-Fort Worth. NASA is active in the Houston area, and Houston is also a major port. Dallas is a center of defense production and hi-tech business.

Round Rock, outside of Austin is the headquarters of Dell and the surrounding area is known as "Silicon Hills". Dell has been involved recently in a series of projects to recycle used and outdated computers, and collected 103 tons of used computers in the Austin, Texas area alone. Austin is the capital of Texas in the Southeastern part of the state, with a metropolitan area population of 1.5 million. Austin is located on the Colorado River, a series of dams have created some lakes that are very convenient for everything from water reservoirs to boating and recreation. It is known for a high rate of left-wing politics for Texas, as well as a large amount of live popular music, mainly around the University of Texas. Other hi-tech and computer companies in town are Apple Computers, Intel, the computer chip maker and Sun Microsystems.
Various initiatives of the state government, such as the Texas Enterprise Fund which has $295 million available to it, and the Texas Emerging Technology Fund, have helped invest state money into projects to help new Texas businesses. The Funds can be used for infrastructure development, job training and other pro-business uses.
