The Competencies of Business Analyst Jobs

Business analyst jobs are a challenging kind of business management jobs. People employed in these jobs are called business analysts. Business companies hire them to make important changes in business processes or policies to meet the goals of the organization. They are also hired to fix a business problem. If the problem is huge, as huge as the company itself, a group of analyst is usually hired to work as a team.

In almost all kinds of business organization, whether in services, production or manufacturing, problems occur; especially if the economy is turning sour, there are new threatening events, or even as simple as when a competitor puts up a shop. The business analyst studies the nature of the business organization, analyses the problem, and proposes solutions. He makes a formal written document about it, gives recommendations or proposals, submits it to the client, discusses it with the user or client, presents it and at times he is asked to be there when the changes are to be implemented.

Indeed, being an analyst is not a simple position. It takes a lot of analytical thinking, planning, and solving to be successful in this kind of area. A person who desires the position should be committed and dedicated, one who does not easily quit, and one who is determined.

Business Analysts Handbook lists down eight necessary competencies of a Business Analyst in order to be successful.

1. A business analyst should be knowledgeable, skillful and able. The first competency involves the ability to elicit or draw out an accurate requirement of the job to be done by gathering and documenting data. This is important so as comprehend the business problem.

2. The Business Analyst is competent in creating a formal, thorough or comprehensive written document also called Business Requirement Document (BRD). The BRD describes all areas of the business requirements, the regulations, as well as functional and non-functional requirements. The BRD is reviewed by the client, discussed with the team and finally approved by the client.

3. He is competent in conducting a structured analysis which is often called modeling. He/she can validate, identify, document and communicate requirements. He/she can construct structured models organizing the information into logical and consistent ideas such as in into process or workflow models.

4. The Business Analyst can conduct an object-oriented analysis in order to show or illustrate the steps of business functions and the processes and also the sub-processes in a business organization.

5. He is competent in testing the products in order to prove if the requirements have been fully met. The Business Analyst can formulate and review the resulting scenario of the test cases.

6. When the resulting product or service is delivered, the Business Analyst makes available support to the end-user or client.

7. The Business Analyst continually learns to improve his/her craft.

8. The Business Analyst is capable of business process reengineering to identify possible areas of improvement utilizing various modeling techniques and envisioning individual processes that can be greatly improved for efficiency.
