The main reason A great Mold Design Is Needed

A quick check around and you will observe that there are lots of things created from plastic. Each and everyone of these began as a mold design. Considering just how many millions of things you can find created from plastic, you can begin to appreciate how significant it is to get a superior mold design. We all have, at some point or another, used a substandard product. The fit and functionality just was lacking and the over-all quality was very poor. It's possible that the fault lies with the injection mold maker or plastic molding process in general, but, in the event the design is inferior, it will make the entire process a great deal more difficult. The best mold design helps to make the manufacturing process possible, or at least considerably easier. With today's complex products and multi-functioning components, it's more useful than before that each and every possible part of the molding process is included.
Appropriate placement and sizes of gates and runners is a good example of how the designer could make or break the project. Imagine if the gates are in an unacceptable spot as well as wrong size? The plastic component may have blemishes, such as warp, too much shrink, or not enough shrink, voids, burn markings, short shots or any one of a number of complications.
Sufficient drafting of sidewalls has to be well-thought out for the success in the job. Inadequate draft will result in sticking parts, scrape markings on the part, or stressed places which could later on fail.
Many times the mold design may be simplified, thus eliminating costly components, such as slides, lifters, ejector blades, core pins or unscrewing mechanisms. This is especially true when it comes to prototype molds or rapid injection mold making.
Surface finish requirements may also be a place where costs can escalate very quickly. Often the specs for a highly polished surface are needless, nevertheless the mold maker isn't going to know this. If the surface finish is automatically entered in a CAD program by default, it may or might not accurately indicate precisely what is actually required or necessary. This holds true for dimensional tolerances. Why have a 4 place decimal dimension if a 3 place dimension works just great? The trend is to overkill and overcompensate, but this brings up the cost significantly.
Ultimately, an effective mold design has to be able to be constructed with all the conventional machining as is feasible. Sure, it's good to think outside the box and try new things, but only when it is actually justified. Impractical concepts can be quite tough to work with and are also rather discouraging for the mold maker.
