The Standards of Quality TranslationSubmitted by jamesfoster Sat, 27 Jun 2009
The process of translation is very sensitive as it deals with multilingual people with no common interface for communication. Any kind of misunderstanding during the communication process can easily end up in a terrible blunder. It is therefore important to follow quality standards of translation.
Quality translation and its standards Certain standards must be applied in order to ensure that translations are of a high quality. The following standards should be applied in the translation of texts. Translating the message rather than the words: It is a well-known fact that any two languages differ greatly in terms of culture, grammar, vocabulary, sentence formation, etc. This means that simply translating word for word from one language into another will not always work. A quality translation is based on the translator's perception. It also ensures that the meaning, not only the words, is translated from one language into another. Language ambiguity: Though ambiguity is a vital part of language, it is often a major obstacle, and occurs much more often in machine translation than in human translation. It also distinguishes amateur translators from professional translators. Ambiguities can be an issue in both the source text and the target text. A quality translation will not have any grammatical or lexical ambiguities. Appropriate mechanism: A quality translation focuses on results rather than method. There is no generic mechanism for translating a text from one language into another. Mechanisms differ with regard to a number of aspects. Choosing an appropriate mechanism, based on the source language, target language and the situation will result in a quality translation. The translator: A high-standard translation with all the features mentioned above is not an easy task to accomplish. It requires a great deal of skill as well as experience. The standard of a translation will, therefore, depend on the skill and professional experience of a translator. The translation standards applied are crucial in determining its quality. A quality translation complies with standards such as language ambiguity, appropriate mechanisms, and translation of meaning, etc. Professional translators comply with such standards and produce quality translations.
