A trade show is a popular marketing event that gathers together companies of a specific industry to simultaneously display their products or promote their services for the purpose of getting new clients, widen their market reach, establish industry contacts and business networks, and get a glimpse of what other similar businesses are doing in terms of new products, services and marketing strategies. In the United States alone, there are more than 2,500 trade events organized every year.

Trade shows are great opportunities for business matchings, where producers or manufacturers, suppliers, distributors and buyers converge to find suitable partners to fill their business needs. They offer convenience for all those involved because important business goals are accomplished and various needs are met all under one roof. Open trade shows allow walk-in visitors and the general public to view while others are trade-only, meaning, it is exclusive to participants and industry guests.

A professional trade show organizer mounts a trade event, for instance, fashion, tourism, information technology or telecommunications and all interested players in that industry sign up to participate and pay an exhibitor's fee. The event can last from one day to one week, and may involve several venues or trade tours. Aside from booth displays and on-site product or service sampling and review, a program is included where resource persons talk about industry issues and other exhibitor activities are held.
