Wood finishing is referred to as the process of protecting the surface of any wooden material. It may also include the provision of embellishment on the surface. The quality of the output depends upon how each step in the process is conducted. Along this line, learn more about the facts behind this manufacturing technique.

Preparing the surface

The entire process starts by preparing the surface through several techniques like sanding, planing and scraping. In some cases, there is also a need to conceal all the imperfections on the surface. Nail holes need to be filled by using either wood filler or a wood putty. If there are blotches on the surface, wood conditioner, gel stains or barrier coats should be applied over the stain.

Applying the finish

Preparing the surface allows the material to attain the purpose of wood finishing, that is, to provide beauty and quality to the output. Once the surface had been prepared, several coats of finish may then be undertaken by the material. During this process, sanding may be required between each coat.

Wax, lacquer, varnish and paint are often used as wood finishes. In certain instances, drying oils like linseed and tung oils are of great help. Finishing the wood may also be an option between water-based and oil-based finishes. Water-based finishes raises the grain and may cause fuzz on the surface that is why an oil-based finish is needed. An oil finish is a thin varnish making use of a large amount of oil or solvent.

Polishing the surface

When the finishes are applied on the wood, polishing may be done with the aid of pumice, steel wool or rotten stone. Wax may also be applied over the polish for added protection. Different tools may be used in wood finishing although brushes and spray guns are the most common. Each of the wood finishing polishes and finishes have its own characteristics. Better look into the advantages and disadvantages to determine what is best for the project. Clear finishes may also be favored.
