Bejeweled 2 iPhone Game Review

Submitted by DanFletcher

Bejeweled 2, the sequel of Bejeweled, is a classic puzzle game. This game too has been developed by Popcap games. This popular game is available on the iPhone as well. This game is so popular that gambling websites like king.com and gaming websites too have offered this game for surfers of the web. This game is fiercely contested on all online portals.

Bejeweled 2 will set you back $10, making it one of the more pricey games available for the iPhone, especially as the game can be played (at least partially) for free at many different online sites. Is it worth the cost to have the ability to play it on the go? What if anything is new to this version of Bejeweled 2? Read on for the answers.

If you loved the classic puzzle games of the old which worked on a "simple to understand but hard to master" premise, you will love Bejeweled 2. Understanding how the game works is not very difficult. The game has two modes and you can choose to play the game in either mode. However, the gameplay is not very different in both the modes.

The game is divided into stages and each stage takes you to a collection of colored gems on the screen. Your goal is to connect identical jewels to form chains. You must form chains of at least three jewels. The chains are formed by dragging the jewels horizontally or vertically. Every move must lead to a match of three identical jewels or else the board shall be reset. This rule has been made to ensure the player does not make moves at random.

The task of creating chains is not very difficult to understand. However, you will have to play very fast to end up with a decent score if you create only small chains consisting of three identical jewels only. Even then, you will lag behind others who are experts in this game. If you want to master the game yourself, you will have to learn how to create large chains and create combos of your own. Only then can you get the maximum score in the shortest possible time. In this regard, this game is very similar to chess.

Longer chains result in greater bonuses the next time you match the indicated gem. When 4 in a row have been matched, the color of gem you just matched will remain behind, glowing. If you can then match it up like normal, a large swath of gems around it will be destroyed in the process, for big points. Matching 5 jewels in a row, the maximum chain available, results in a super gem on the field, that when matched with any 2 same gems, will destroy all of those gems left on the field. A combo works as a result of a match leaving other gems realigned in a position where they too match, and so on. Each successive combo results in double points, and can often build up quickly as a result of pure luck.

The graphics are sharp and colourful, with static background images that are interesting to view, but not so distracting that they'll pull your attention from the game. The combos and chains result in some nice explosions of color, but for the most part there isn't a whole lot happening on the screen that will make you stand up and take notice. This being a puzzle game, too much graphical prowess or glitzy effects could actually hinder the gameplay, so this balance is ultimately for the better.

The music setup of this game is not the best in the world. However, it serves the purpose of this game and ensures that players are not distracted by the sound effects. The audio production and the sound effects have been designed to facilitate rapid thinking.

The lack of any type of score keeping in the form of a high scores list is certainly disappointing, as this is a staple of games of this type, and has been since the dawn of gaming. Bejeweled 2 also lacks any additional modes or variations of any kind to separate it from the many different versions already out there, also somewhat of a disappointment.

Bejeweled 2 is an interesting and fun puzzle game. This game will last for a long time as it may take months for individual to master this game. However, this game feels a bit random instead of being challenging or strategic. In this regard, it is a bit different from other popular puzzle games. If you have played this game before, then paying ten dollars for this game and keeping yourself occupied during your daily commute is a good idea. However, the price tag is very high if you are playing this game for the first time.

Game Score: 6 out of 10
