The first thing you need to do is pick up mining as a secondary profession, or have an alt that is a miner. The best way to get your gems as a jewelcrafter is by prospecting ore. Sure, you'll pick up a few gems here and there from looting mobs, but it won't be anywhere near enough to level you fast, and you'll waste a lot of time. You could also buy stacks of ore from the auction house, but then you'll be wasting a lot of gold. So what you need to do is sink a few hours into mining. You'll be able to sell any ore leftover on the auction house, as well as any gems you've outgrown the use for.

The crap thing about jewelcrafting, that I found, is that there are hardly any trainers for it. I don't know why Blizzard are so stingy with the trainers, but there you go. What I did was set my hearth to Silvermoon City during the jewelcrafting levelling process. It makes it far easier to get new recipes as they become available to you, and you won't have to waste your time with zeppelins and flight paths in order to get them.

There are some professions that people try to steer clear of because they're reputed to be a gold sink, and jewelcrafting is one of those. But, these people are stupid. They're failing to realise that jewelcrafting makes BIG money in the higher levels. And you won't be spending a lot of gold to get there if you follow my tips above. Do your jewelcrafting dailies in Dalaran religiously - they will certainly help you become a grand master jewelcrafter, and earn you some nice rewards while you're at it. Once you're able to cut epic gems (and it won't take long!) you will be making a mint on the auction house, and through the tips people will give you for cutting your gems.
