Laptop Power Supplies - Critical Battery

Submitted by Dirk Rowell

Even the most power savvy laptop device is still fundamentally dependent on its laptop ac adapter, as after a few hours of truly portable computing, you will need to recharge its battery. This makes laptop power supplies an incredibility critical aspect of a laptop - and therefore it is important that they are treated as such!

One of the most common ways to damage a laptop ac adapter is to manipulate the wire into unnatural positions - this is exacerbated by the fact that laptops are often used non-statically. Problems occur when the jack on the end of laptop power supplies becomes damaged, which is an extremely common reason for malfunctioning adapters.

All laptop owners understand that laptops have an extraordinary facility to become overheated, and this too carries certain risks in regards to the laptop power supply - with this in mind, you should avoid leaving your device plugged in for too long at a time, as this may or may not lead to heat related damage of the laptop ac adapter.

On a similar note, it is important that your adapter uses an appropriate voltage for your particular laptop, of course by opting for the same model of adapter than your previous when replacing your device the voltages should match - however, when opting for compatible adapters such as travel adapters, then it might be worth double checking the voltage.

As long as you treat your laptop power adapter with a bit of tlc, and more like an extension to your laptop than an accessory, then it should last for a considerable amount of time. There is a misconception that over-use of a laptop ac adapter will have a detrimental effect on battery life, but this shouldn't be the case - over time, however, the chances of laptop power supplies becoming faulty do tend to increase, and therefore it might be a good idea to ensure you have a spare to hand, especially if your laptop is used for work etc.
