One of the main questions that pop up when a prospective printer buyer is at the store is whether they should buy an inkjet or laser printer. Most technology oriented consumers will not have to live through this drama, but the fact is that most consumers are not so technology oriented. Most people that you see at the store buying a printer will most likely not know what the difference between a laser and inkjet printer is. Knowing this simple fact can be beneficial to both your printer's overall performance and your pocket.

One of the main considerations when looking at both inkjet printers and laser printers is volume usage. An inkjet printer works very well for low volume printing, which are primarily text documents. Also, usage that may require some type of color on an occasional basis can be handled very well with an inkjet printer. However, inkjets are not designed for a large volume of printing per day. Also, the cost of new ink cartridges can be high when the volume of printing is higher. Ink cartridges for inkjet printers simply do not last as long as laser printer ink cartridges. If you anticipate using the printer extensively, then the laser printer is the better option. The laser printer is built to hold up to repeated daily usage and large print jobs. Also, the ink cartridges that are manufactured for the laser printers last longer than the ones manufactured for inkjets. Color is also a factor when it comes to the laser printer. Laser printers simply produce a higher quality image.

Also remember that the type of paper that will be used is also important when deciding whether to purchase an inkjet or a laser printer. A laser printer typically uses various weights of paper with little or no problem, yet inkjets tend to work best with standard paper. If your goal is to use the printer to create marketing material by printing on different types of media, especially on stiffer paper, then the laser printer is the printer you should purchase.

Your personal economy also plays a crucial role when buying a printer. Depending on how much you want to spend can also determine the printer that is right for you. Good quality inkjets can be purchased for a relatively low amount of money. If you have a tight budget, going with an inkjet may be a wise move. Keep in mind that even though inkjet printers are cheaper, ink cartridges aren't. Replacing the ink cartridges can become very costly if your average print usage continues to increase over time.

So remember when it comes to choosing between an inkjet and laser printer, think about 3 important factors: usage, amount of color, and the paper type. If you find that these three factors are crucial to you, then the laser printer is your best choice. If you are looking to invest a small amount of capital, and foresee low usage for your printer, then it will be better for you to purchase an inkjet printer.
