Anyone who has lost their data will understand the enormity of the problem. The loss of data can leave one totally helpless as to the next course of action.
Thus it is that one has to be very careful in regard to a possible loss of data. If such an eventuality occurs and is noticed in a suitable time frame, then there are chances that the lost data can be recovered. It all depends upon what a person does and does not do in this eventuality. The most important aspect will be to avoid a panic reaction and deal with the situation in a level headed manner. Data Loss In the study and development of software applications, data loss is referred to as an unexpected loss of digital data or digitally encrypted information. This is distinct from the possibility of unavailability of data, which might be the case if requisite media storage devices are not available or there is a break up in the internet connectivity. Even though in both instances an individual is left high and dry, nevertheless there is an enormous difference between the two. While unavailability of data can be easily addressed, the loss of data is a more serious and complicated issue. Causes for Data Loss There can be several causes for data loss. It can be owing to any hardware problem in the computer system. In another instance some software malfunctioning may cause loss of data. Similarly the data can be lost on account of a natural disaster. Besides these, the other causes for the loss of data may be a terrorist attack or even a fire that engulfs the computer system. Theft by an employee or an outsider may also lead to loss of data. Another reason may be a sabotage of some sort that destroys the files or the programme. Irrespective of the reason behind it, the consequent effect of a data loss is same in all instances. The owners of the data are denied access to what is rightfully speaking, their property. They are left holding empty shells devoid of necessary information. Action Plan In the event of a data loss, must keep it in mind to remain as calm and composed as possible. Getting panicky and trying to undo the damage on one’s own is highly unlikely to solve anything. There may be a strong urge to rectify the situation, nevertheless one must restrain from taking any untoward action. Do it Yourself Software It is possible to try and run a do it yourself software to try and retrieve the lost data. Such software’s are easily available in the market place and on the internet. A simple search on the internet will bring forth hundreds of options. An individual can choose the software most suitable to his or her needs. The payment for the same can be made online via credit card and the software can either be couriered to the purchaser or downloaded directly from the website of any of the companies. However there is a problem with the DIY software. It may not be able to address the problem appropriately. Not only that, usage of the software may lead to further complications with the system. This can be a more common scenario than what one may anticipate. Data Recovery Companies The best thing may be to try and refer the matter to an expert who is capable of handling such scenarios. There are several data recovery companies that can help an individual in such eventualities. These data recovery companies have special clean rooms where the hard disk drive can be opened. These data recovery companies have numerous highly trained professionals whose job is to recover data from any given data loss event. They have all the software and requisite tools to attend to the problem. The data recovery companies may charge highly but it depends on the importance of the data to its owner. What to Avoid Besides the guidelines regarding the DIY software and the data recovery companies, what is of equal importance is what not to do. In the event of a data loss one must avoid certain actions: First and foremost all actions on the computer system must be stopped completely. It must be kept in mind that any further work on the computer might endanger the data by overwriting upon it. For the same reason one must also avoid surfing the internet as that too may lead to overwriting of the data. About the Author
