The Datacard SP55 is a mid-range ID printer that offers a broad array of features. It is an excellent solution for businesses that require flexibility in card creation. This full color model is available in both single and dual sided versions. Reloading the cards to print the second side isn’t necessary since the equipment uses an automatic turnover station. This inline process is still quite fast (up to 155 full color cards per hour). Having the ability to print extra data on the back of each card is a plus for many enrollment programs. This additional space is often used to show signatures and a small, monochrome copy of the ID photo to enhance badge security.

Dye sublimation ribbon is used to create the image on the front of each card. The Datacard SP55 Plus printhead is designed to offer full coverage so no white space shows around the edges of the printed design. This is the preferred look for cards issued to customers since it displays the image or artwork at full size without blank borders. These gift, reward, membership, and loyalty cards can also be printed with a bar code on the reverse side for simple data management. With an additional encoding module, magnetic stripe cards can be created for loading funds and tracking usage habits as well.

Mag stripe encoding is also a popular option for employee ID badges since it offers time and attendance management and access control capabilities. However, for more secure environments many employers are choosing to upgrade to contact or proximity cards. The SP55 printer offers a wide variety of alternatives. End users can select smart card readers, read/write units, and combinations for programming contact and contactless devices. The iClass modules by HID (Fargo) are often the preferred brand for proximity card applications on this machine. The printer can also be equipped with internal contacts to connect to a third party reader of the operator’s choice. This low cost solution is compatible with many different programs. It is a good idea to consult with a specialist before making a final decision on any upgrade.

This Datacard printer comes standard with a bidirectional USB connection. This allows the equipment to communicate with the PC by showing prompts and error messages. The print driver offers many user friendly features such as color image previews and help options. This software is fully functional when used with Windows operating systems such as 2000, XP, and Vista. The LCD screen on the printer itself provides additional prompts to make training and operation simple. This model also has the ability to automatically validate ribbons to ensure proper image quality.

An Ethernet port can be factory installed for locations that wish to network several workstations to the SP 55. This allows multiple departments to access the equipment for card production. The optional lockable input tray offers some protection against unauthorized use in such cases. Many customers also select software that restricts user access to preset levels for additional security.
