The notebook computer is quickly replacing the desktop as most computer owner's favorite machine. Not only is it portable for travel, it is also portable for use in the home. When used on a desk, it is not the massive monitor that even streamlined current desktops and monitors are. Wireless cards and growing wifi providers and hosts ensure that the internet is always accessible.

Notebooks are generally more expensive than desktop models; however, they have decreased significantly in the past few years in cost. Many students and home users can easily afford a decent laptop. Careful review of brands and models should be done also, as a more costly model may indeed be one of the more dependable and longer lasting; this equals money well spent.

A good place to start is a large office supply store that has dedicated knowledgeable staff members purposely working in the computer department. Often, these employees are computer gurus; they tend to be honest and forthcoming about the better brands, and readily share their tried and true favorites. These stores do have sales, and many have a clearance board as well of more pricey models that just need to be moved for new inventory.

Battery use is quite heavy with most laptops; if using in the home, simply keeping it plugged into its charger cord will eliminate the problem of a quickly drained battery. When traveling, there are compatible car chargers, and some users like to have a spare charged battery on hand as well.

The notebook purchased should come with a factory warranty and option to purchase a store warrant as well. Upgrades should be part of the purchased package, and many will also include discounted or free software suites. Another good item to look for is an ergonomic laptop stand. Most are handy for travel, and it is crucial to have one if the laptop will be used while lying in bed. These stands allow the notebook to get enough air so as not to burn out the CPU. They also ensure less stress on the hands and wrists of the user, and the back and neck as well.

Most laptop computers now come standard with a DVD and/or CD player (possibly burning capabilities as well), and multiple USB ports for things like flash drives and other electronic connections. Webcams are normally built-in as a feature on most laptops now. A wireless mouse is an important tool to have for heavy users; most of them will not like the touchpad mouse on the laptop keyboard very much. A protective skin or case can also be purchased to prevent dinging and scratching the casing of the computer.

Memory is not such a hard thing to come by in most laptops now. Many are now equipped with 2 GB minimum. More have 3 or 4 GB, which is what a heavy user or student will need. This is to avoid the money and hassle in adding more memory in the future. The computer will run cleaner and faster for longer. Most heavy users or gamers will prefer a larger screen as well, whereas lighter users will be content with a small or standard screen, this does save some more money. Having rewritable CDs and DVDs or flash drives on hand allows for storage apart from the computer; this is vital to memory saving and prevention of file loss.

Proper research and time put in to the purchase of a good notebook computer will be well worth. This will enable the user to be happy for at least a few years to come, just by following a few simple tips.
