Paid Search Marketing

Submitted by David Salt

When doing a search on one of many search engines, you can find many hits regarding a particular topic of interest. The order of the results returned after doing a search are a result of paid search marketing campaigns. This strategy allows websites to pay for a higher status in the search results and is widely used. This helps websites increase the amount of visitors to their sites.

One type of paid search marketing is the pay per click strategy. Created in 1998, its popularity has soared over the years. With pay per click, websites pay a predetermined fee if users actually click the link to their website. This is very appealing to many website owners as they don't actually pay for anything unless the search results send web users to their website. The pricing varies depending upon the search engine and keywords used. Some website owners are leery of using pay per click campaigns. They fear that fraud may occur if the clicks are abused. However, precautions have been taken by most of the major search engines to prevent this from happening. Some of these pay per click providers include Google AdWords, Yahoo Search marketing and Microsoft adCenter.

There are two kinds of fees that can be associated with pay per click. One kind of fee is the flat-rate fee and the other is the bid-based fee. With flat-rate fees, a fixed amount is agreed upon. This amount will be paid for each click. Bid-based fees work more like an auction. Potential customers place bids with search engines. These bids are the highest fee that the website will pay. The auction occurs whenever a search is done for a keyword that has been bidded on. Usually the ad with the highest bid will be placed in the search engine's precious first spot. These pay per click ads usually are comprised for a short heading coupled with a brief description of the promoted business or service. The guidelines for these ads are rather precise and most often the ad must be submitted ahead of time in order to be approved.
