Repair or Replace Your computerSubmitted by SunnySingLing123 Sun, 7 Jun 2009
Being a techie guy, I like to repair my computer when there is a problem, for me it's a challenge and one that I look forward to. However computers being so cheap these days, I often get asked whether it's worth repairing an old computer or buying a new one. I often cannot give a straight answer; reason being is because it's a very broad question. I would need to know what's wrong with the PC and how old it is before giving an answer.
Generally speaking old computers have lots of spyware and deep virus infections and some which are beyond repair. Also occasionally I recommend hardware upgrades too. Now this all can get very expensive when I quote my client the following: Backup of file and folders Reinstallation of operating system Upgrade RAM to 2GB Upgrade hard drive Reinstall programs and settings Actually sometimes my quotes almost match the price of a new computer from PC World. When the computer is in bad condition and you know that it's going to take you lot's of time to fix and it requires a hardware upgrade, I would not repair it instead I would replace it! These days I simply replace computers for business clients, it saves time trying to fix it and it's a long term solution. To be honest with you computers are dead cheap these days and they are getting cheaper! The big brand names such as HP, DELL, Acer and others are all in big competition with each other, hence the low prices. But I don't generally replace every computer I come across, I like to repair computers because I have a passion for it and in some cases it's a better solution to repair than to replace. I always try my best to repair home user computers because it's cheaper frankly speaking for the client. For businesses it depends on the scope of the problem before I decide to replace, because replacing is not always the right solution. If the computer has a blue screen of death, then I generally replace it with a temporary computer and work on the one which is broken, This way it doesn't cause the business any disruption and I can work on it using all my time. I've come to the conclusion that every case is different when asked "shall I repair it or replace it". There simply isn't a straight answer. It all depends on how bad the computer is, if it's broken and you know it's going to cost the client a lot of time in labour, then just replace it. If you know problem and you know it's fixable, then repair it. About the Author
