Roulette: How to predict the winning number.

Submitted by David Salt
Mon, 8 Jun 2009

It might not be possible to predict the actual winning number at roulette but it might be possible to predict the sector of the wheel in which the ball will fall. Having this knowledge will turn the odds of winning considerably to your favour and will enable you to win a remarkably high proportion of times. There are numerous casinos around the world, so if you are not too greedy at any one of them you could go on to amass a huge fortune in a relatively short period of time.
Superficially the result of a spin of the wheel might appear to be an entirely random event, but in fact it is only pseudo-random. This is because if the system starting parameters, such as speed, ball position on entering the wheel, ball spin rate, and initial ball trajectory, certain specific characteristics relating to the wheel geometries and material properties such as the elasticity of the ball and the frets, were all known in advance, then it would be a possible to calculate the wheel sector into which the ball fall. In fact it is not random at all, but is what mathematicians call a deterministic system. That means that if all the initial conditions were to be repeated exactly, then the outcome would be identical.
There have been many attempts to do this and some professional roulette players have claimed to been successful. In fact in a book published in 1985 by Thomas Bass called The Eudaemonic Pie the author describes the exploits of a number of American graduate students who used hidden computers to carry out such an exercise. Although the system had numerous flaws and only worked to a limited extent, it was at least a demonstration in principle that his could be done. As a result the use of portable computers in casinos has been banned.
Is it necessary to use a computer? Could a human being watching the ball predict the outcome of a spin while leaving him sufficient time to place a bet? Certainly there are players who claim to be able to carry this out and to be making significant sums of money. Furthermore, many claim that it is skill than anybody with reasonable computational skills can acquire.
