‘Backup service is not running' Windows Home Server Error and Recovery

Submitted by servesbest

Windows Home Server is the server solution for homes that have multiple PCs connected. It is implemented to provide purposes like data backup, file sharing, remote access etc. But at times, you observe issues like hard drive failure with it. As the consequence, you get certain error messages and ultimately, the system stops functioning. In such situations, you need to use a recent data backup to restore the lost data. But, if data backup is corrupt, not up-to-date or absent, Server Recovery need to be used to extract the lost data.

Consider a scenario, when you turn on your Windows Home Server system, the following error message gets displayed on the screen:

"Backup service is not running"
or
"Backup Service Error - A possible database consistency problem has been detected in the backup database"

You encounter this error message when the heath status button of Windows Home Server is red and its health status is critical.

Cause

The above issue occurs due to one of the below causes:

• A hard drive is missing
• You haven't removed a hard drive properly
• A hard drive has failed

Solution

To correct this issue, you need to follow these methods in order:

• Try restarting the server and check if the problem gets resolved.
• Make sure that all the connected hard drives are turned on and properly configured.
• If you have recently disconnected a hard drive, try reconnecting it. You need to use Remove a Hard Drive Wizard to correctly disconnect the hard drive. In Windows Home Server, files are distributed across multiple hard drives connected to it. Thus, removing it correctly ensures proper file migration to another hard drive of system.
• You need to log on to Windows Home Server Console from any of the connected systems and check the status of each hard drive connected. If any of your hard drive's status is Unhealthy, right-click it and click Repair. If hard drive is permanently damaged, you need to consult a Data Recovery company for extracting lost information. Server Data Recovery is the specialized technical assistance to recover data from failed or crashed Server hard drives or SSDs.
