Build your Vocabulary and Ace that JobSubmitted by Belle Jose. Mon, 7 Mar 2011
If you do not believe that an advanced vocabulary of words can land you a job, you may already be left behind. It is but common now that talking smart has helped a lot of people in different situations at different times. Talking smart is not about being arrogant or condescending but it means using the right words, giving the right answers and asking the proper questions when called for.
A job interview is one instance that talking smart will really help and if you have a good storage of words, you may be able to ace it right away. After all, who does not want to be employed nowadays? Words to Look Out For You may have a vast vocabulary but the words in it are not fit for a job interview. Even if it's not an office job that you are applying for, professionalism is still the way to go. Avoid slang like "totally, dude, you know or whatever," these may be cool words to say but these will all give you a failing mark on an interview. At the same time, any kind of expression with profanity is a no-no. Etiquette is a must in any business transaction. Research about the company you are applying at especially if they have a website or you may just research about the industry the company is involved in. Take note of the words commonly used to describe the company and its business or that of the field the company is in. Integrate these words in your answers to the questions of the interviewer. Practice your Vocabulary Words Make sure you know the meaning of your learned words and the proper way of pronouncing then practice saying the words especially in sentences. It would also be wise to conduct a mock interview with your close friend perhaps, and you may have a brainstorming session on what could be the possible interview questions and use the words again in your answers. This way you are able to build your confidence in saying and using the words. You may not be aware of it but this confidence will extend to your overall image during the job interview. After the Interview The job interview may not be the only stage you will need to face to eventually be hired. You may still need to take exams like simulations or written tests. These are great avenues again to use your newly built vocabulary and enhanced conversation skills. Simulations may be phone simulations and this is still similar to an interview, so ensure that on the phone conversation you still choose professional and business words. Written tests are not fully different from the interview also. Written tests may have essay parts wherein you would need to describe or explain something. Most of the time, the questions pertain to the interests of the business. Integrate the words you've learned also in your answers but now, in writing. Building your vocabulary and communication skills to be more competitive will not harm you in anyway, it may even open the doors to a longed-for career.
