I've noticed my users spending up to 15 minutes sitting in front of their computers, at the end of their workday, just staring at the screen doing nothing. Why do they do that? They were simply watching the screen, waiting for Windows to shut down so they can go home.

Many of us have encountered this long delay before, and chances are, if you are waiting this long, Windows will not shut down. So what a lot of people do is they hold on to the power button and force the computer to turn off, or they just unplug the power cable. This is unsafe because data may be lost. There is a chance that the system may not be able to start up the next time round.

There are ways to fix this. The primary reason for Windows shutting down problems is the registry. The Windows registry is a big central database residing on your computer that is used by Windows and most applications to store settings and other important information. In the course of using the computer, it is constantly added to and after some time, it can contain lots of junk and erroneous entries.

Because every single aspect of Windows uses the registry, an error in the registry can cause malfunctions in various parts of the system. While Windows does provide a utility to edit the registry, it requires in-depth knowledge to know what to edit and where to edit. For most of us, it is safer to use a registry cleaner software to automate this process and ensure that wrong edits don't crash the system.

A good registry cleaner will scan the registry in search of obsolete and wrong entries, and then fix them for you. You don't need to be technically inclined. It should be easy to use and hassle-free. Because registry maintenance should be done periodically, finding one that is simple yet powerful is important.
