Outlook Express Crashes when Replying to an E-mail

Submitted by mrpeter

Outlook Express is one of the most common e-mail clients used for business and personal e-mailing purposes. The application creates a separate DBX file for each of the folders that you see in 'Local Folders' list, for example Inbox.dbx, Sent Items.dbx, etc. If any of these folders gets corrupt, you see abnormal behavior while sending or receiving e-mails, which thereby contributes to user problems. However, to retrieve e-mails from these corrupted folders, you need to either have an updated data backup or a third-party Outlook Express Recovery utility that can repair the corrupted DBX files.

After a brief introduction to DBX folder corruption issues, here is a specific problem that you might encounter while working with Outlook Express. Consider an instance when you receive an e-mail message and you attempt to send a reply to this message. But when you do so, the reply function doesn't work, but instead Outlook Express crashes. The similar crash issue is observed when you are creating a new e-mail message.

Such type of issues are likely to occur when any of the below situations is true:

1)An e-mail spam filter is preventing e-mails to be sent
2)One of the DBX files is corrupted

User Action

To troubleshoot the given behavior and Recover Outlook Express, you need to delete or repair the corrupted DBX file(s). But before you do so, disable the e-mail spam filter. But if the issue continues, follow the below given steps to find and delete/repair the DBX file(s):
1)
2)Start Outlook Express
3)Click Tools | Options | Maintenance | Store Folder
4)Note down the location of Store Folder
5)Quit Outlook Express
6)Browse to the location of Store Folder
7)Move Inbox.dbx file to some other location
8)Start Outlook Express. A new Inbox will be created
9)Check if the issue persists. If yes, Inbox.dbx is the corrupted folder
10)If the problem continues, repeat the above steps for each of the Outlook Express folders, one at a time
11)Delete the corrupted DBX file if it doesn't contain any important e-mails or repair it using a third-party Outlook Express Recovery tool.
