Problems Using Active Directory Migration Tool for OST

Submitted by mrpeter

Active Directory Migration Tool (ADMT) is a utility that allows migrating users, groups, and computers from one domain to a different domain. In most of the situations, when Exchange Server is involved, ADMT is usually used to perform migration from Exchange Server 5.5 to Exchange Server 2000. For successful completion of migration, all OST files that are stored as local copies of e-mails on local computers, need to be in good state. A corrupted OST can not only lead to inaccessibility of e-mails, but also prevents ADMT to finish migration. An administrator can solve such problems, subject to the availability of a backup or a utility that can Convert OST to PST. All the Outlook data that has been converted to PST file format, that can be directly accessed and viewed.

Here is a scenario that describes the problem in detail, along with possible solutions to resolve it while running ADMT for an Exchange Server domain. Suppose, an Exchange Server administrator decides to migrate the users of domain 'A' to a newly created domain 'B' using ADMT. All users, except for one, cannot be migrated to this new domain. This user uses MS Outlook in offline mode.

On analyzing the root of problem, Exchange administrator notices that all the emails suddenly disappear from the local user OST file. There is no way of opening the OST file data in readable format.

Explanation

All the symptoms, described above, indicate corruption of OST file. This can occur for reasons like, power outage, virus attack, and more.

Recovery Tips

In order to access e-mail data from a corrupted and inaccessible Outlook OST, following solutions can be implemented:

1)Exit Outlook and run OST Integrity Checker Tool (Scanost.exe) to repair corrupted OST on the local computer. You can later synchronize it with Exchange Server.

2)If the problem remains unresolved, you need a third-party OST to PST solution that can repair corrupted OST and later convert it in a usable format of PST file. Convert OST to PST software are reliable applications that are designed specifically to extract valuable data from an OST file.

Stellar Phoenix Mailbox Exchange Desktop is a feature-rich, safe utility that converts an orphaned and corrupted OST to PST, so it can be used directly within MS Outlook. This software supports MS Outlook 2007, 2003, 2002, and 2000, and has an interactive display that makes the utility easy to navigate.
