One of the primary reasons for any company to develop software applications is that the costs of making it will be cover the costs of making and licensing along with profit. However, this is not true all the time and sometimes the software does not help in generating the revenue that it is expected to. Have you ever wondered what people do with such a product that is not entirely dead but is not much useful or perhaps the company do not want to invest any longer in developing the product any further.

Open source the software is one of the options available and that also has certain benefits for consideration. The benefit of this is that the people who find the software worth using will keep on using it since it is free. But the software will still not be able to generate any revenues. Hence it is not such a good option for a dying product. Many a times, companies prefer to keep such products on their catalog but would have stopped its production and developing it. Another option that can be considered is to sell the software. There are certainly some of the people who trying to get a break into the market or perhaps the competitors in the market would like to buy it. However, while selling such software one needs to sell the product at the right time and to find an appropriate buyer. This mostly depends on the software itself it is a completely no revenue generating software then there will not be any buyers for sure.

Other companies prefer to off shoot the product or service but this not an effective solution as it will indirectly convey to the people that the product cannot stand on its own. Hence, it is definitely not a good idea for getting rid of the product. One more way the people get rid of the dying product is by not supporting the product. Successful web development companies like Microsoft have done this with their products. However, the usage of the product doesn't stop immediately as it might take some time for the users to migrate to other software.

However, there cannot be any set rule of getting rid of the dying product and the way to dispose the product depends entirely on the company possessing it. The company does it according to the prevailing situations and scenario.
