Why do I need Filters and Spyware?Submitted by Celeste Mon, 5 Nov 2007
Email filters and anti-spyware are almost always included in an e-mail package from ISP companies. Filters are involved in a process that eliminates all spam e-mails that might come into your inbox. This includes those e-mails from online pharmacies wanting you to buy miracle ointments, and bank fraud e-mails.
Filters also eliminate e-mails that might contain viruses or computer worms. They are able to do this through a process of organising emails according to specific criteria. Generally, they do this for incoming messages, but it can also be used for outgoing mail as well. Users can create their own “manual” filters, by choosing the criteria, but generally most e-mail programs have their own automatic spam filter function. Businesses use them as they are also able to protect their employees and their information technology assets. Anti-Spyware is an additional protection to an e-mail filter. Spyware is computer software that steals personal information from computers without the user knowing. Anti-spyware counteracts this. Spyware is not a type of virus or worm, as those self-replicate. It exploits businesses computers for commercial gain. It gains access to the computer through deception and other software vulnerabilities. They come in through other software by either “piggybacking” or tricking users into installing them, similar to a Trojan horse. For example, you browse the net and then a pop-up window appears asking you to install new anti-spyware, which is actually the spyware itself. Anti-spyware is created to block these, as well as remove spyware. The other issue with spyware is that it will slowly eat away at a user’s bandwidth. It does this as it sends the information it has gathered back to the spyware’s home for the hacker. As it uses up the bandwidth, computer memory and other system resources, it causes the computer to crash or cause basic system instability. For e-mails, the anti-spyware is protection to stop users' personal information being part of the data collected. They prevent hackers from accessing personal and company information from e-mails that are being sent. With anti-spyware and filters, you protect both incoming and out going e-mails from hackers. They also prevent your computer from being infected with any viruses that e-mails coming in might bring. It stops your bandwidth from being taken up from endless spam being downloaded from your inbox. Overall, investing in e-mail packages that contain these two systems is going to benefit you and your company in the long run. Employing ISP companies with these as part of their packages will be a valuable resource, as then the hassle of updating the system is taken off of your shoulders as well. About the Author
