10 Ways to Lose at Poker (8)

Submitted by David Salt
Mon, 26 Oct 2009

The eighth way to lose at poker is to bluff inappropriately. Many people, particularly new players, think that poker is all about bluffing. Often these kinds of people will bluff on all sorts of hands when bluffing is the very last thing they should be doing.

When you bluff you are essentially attempting to deceive your opponent into thinking that you have either a worse or a better hand than you do. There are many people who will disagree with this statement and will argue that, by bluffing, you are just trying to pretend that you have a better hand than in fact you really do have. We can see where they are coming from, but in fact in a long game you might well wish to deceive your opponent that you are likely to bluff when you hold poor cards. You are quite happy to be caught out in these bluffs, so that when you have a good hand and you again play in a similar manner, your opponent might again think you are bluffing. (Naturally this kind of tactic demands a fairly high level of sophistication in your play.)

The point that we are attempting to make is that bluffing is a complex process that can be subject to a considerable amount of confusion. The ability to bluff correctly is what differentiates a good poker player from a bad one. In order to learn when to bluff need a considerable amount of study and practice and fortunately there is some quality material that has been written on the subject. We recommend that you study it in depth.
