9 To 5 Musical - From A Book And 80's Movie To BroadwaySubmitted by reedstickets Tue, 29 Sep 2009
9 to 5 Musical is based on a book written by Patricia Resnick and the movie from 1980. All of the music and lyrics are written by Nashville's very own, Dolly Parton. The show was nominated for four Tony Awards, and it received fifteen Drama Desk Awards, the most for a musical in one single year.
9 to 5 Musical originally started at Center Theatre Group in September 2008, and then it came to Broadway in April 2009. After the Broadway production of the show is closed, the cast will go on a national tour to promote the musical in September 2010. Violet, Doralee and Judy are played by Allison Janney, Megan Hilty and Stephanie J. Block. These three ladies work together for Consolidated Industries, where they cannot stand the president of the company who is played by Marc Kudisch. Kudisch plays the role of Franklin Hart, Jr. The first act of 9 to 5, the musical shows Violet, Doralee and Judy at work. Violet ends up training Judy, and Doralee cannot embrace the fact that Franklin Hart, Jr. lusts after her, his very own secretary. Judy has a terrible first day, as do Violet and Doralee, so they all go back to Violet's house where they each have their twisted and evil songs to sing about Hart, and they even go back to work thinking that they have poisoned him in some way. They were just afraid their dreams became reality. After a co-worker, Roz, overhears the ladies talking, she runs and tells Hart that they thought they poisoned him. He finds the three ladies and threatens them with the police, so what do they do? Tie him up with phone cords! Once the ladies arrive back at the office, they try to find a way to cover up Hart's disappearance, but he storms in holding Judy hostage. Mr. Tinsworthy, played by Michael X. Martin, is the CEO of Consolidated, and he appears at the office one day wondering who had made all of the changes to the company. Judy, Violet and Doralee step up and say they did. Ironically, 9 to 5 Musical ends with Franklin Hart, Jr. leaving and managing the branch in Bolivia, while Violet is promoted to the president position that Hart had at the current branch. There are several nominations that 9 to 5: The Musical received such as: Best Original Score - Tony Award Best Leading Actress Performance in a musical for Allison Janney - Tony Award Best Featured Actor Performance in a musical for Marc Kudisch - Tony Award Best Choreography - Tony Award Nomination for Outstanding Musical 9 to 5 Musical is a sadistic, yet a humorous musical that will have the audience on the edge of their seats.
