Betting on Sports using Pools & LotteriesSubmitted by David Salt Tue, 23 Jun 2009
There are many different kinds of sports betting that occur all over the world. One such form that is prevalent is known as the betting pool or in some locations a sports lottery or sweep. This form of betting can occur just about anywhere making it extremely popular. Commonly played in offices, this may be known as an office pool.
The pool reference comes from the nature of the bet. In a pool, all players must pay a fee in order to participate. Additionally, they must also make their prediction regarding the result of another aspect of a sporting evening. The money paid in fees is then "pooled" together. The participant or participants who made the closest prediction will win the money. If more than one winner occurs, then the money is usually split evenly among all of the winners. The amount of the winnings of course directly correlates to the number of participants. The more people that play, the more money that can be won. This concept is similar to a lottery which explains why in some geographic locations, this form of sports betting is called a lottery. Pool betting has been around since the early half of the 20th century. The first pool bet occurred in the United Kingdom. Created by a man by the name of Sir John Mores, pool betting was first placed on football. As time progressed so did this type of betting which is know referred to as sports lotteries in the United Kingdom. Football continues to be the sport predominantly wagered upon in pool betting. Most forms of sport betting have found a presence on the World Wide Web. This is also true for pool betting. Websites offer customers the chance to place a bet over a particular sporting event. These websites also provide other features for users. Statistics regarding the sports are included that allow users to peruse prior to placing their wager. Many find they prefer participating in pools online rather than on land. The whole process seems much easier to keep track of as well as easier to locate a pool. About the Author
