Visiting a casino for the first time can be a rather daunting experience. The last thing you want to appear like is a fish out of water, so here are some tips on how to apply the proper etiquette when playing blackjack.

These tips assume that you understand the rules of the game and that you have at least practised playing either with friends or at an online casino . This is absolutely essential unless you don't mind looking like a complete dummy.

The first thing you must remember about playing this game is to keep your sticky fingers off the cards in a face up game. (It has been known in the past for players to mark the cards with fluorescent dies using their fingers. The marked cards can then be spotted through special spectacles the next time they appear. Casinos are very fussy about that sort of thing.)

Even if you are playing a face down game, only touch your cards the minimum amount. If you start fiddling with them you will, at the very least, receive a curt comment from the dealer, which may potentially cause you considerable embarrassment.

Do not touch your chips after you have bet. (It has been known for players to sneak a few extra chips on their pile during the game. Casinos are very fussy about that kind of thing too.)

Unless you wish to look like a total newbie, put that basic strategy card that you bought at the casino shop away. If you really need to study it, do so in a secluded corner of the bar where nobody can see you. There are no rules about using it during play, but we urge you to refrain from doing so - it is so un-cool.

Similarly, if you are doubling, make sure that you make a new pile of chips and that you don't simply add to your existing pile. You might not be a cheat, but casinos, justifiably or not, will always make the assumption that you are.

Enjoy your game.
