Poker is one of the most popular card games in the world. This fast-paced, fun-filled game can be enjoyed by a multiple number of players. The origins of poker are shrouded in mystery though it is said to have started more than ten centuries ago. Of course, the game has evolved a lot since then. You can learn to play poker at the wassonline.com and make some great friends in the process.

According to a popular belief, poker was first played by the Chinese way back in the 10th century. Egyptians played an early form of the game in the 12th and 13th centuries. In Persia a version of poker called ‘Ganfija’ was played in the 16th century. The French played ‘Poque’ and it was the national game in the 18th century. The German played ‘Pochen’. Both were early versions of poker. It was the ‘Primero’ played by the Spanish from the year 1526 that is known as the ‘poker mother’ as it is the first version of the game that has direct similarities to modern poker. The concept of bluffing and calling high stakes in spite of having poor cards so that opponents would be deceived was known to the Spanish.

The earliest written reference of poker was found in the writings of Jonathan H. Green in 1834. He referred to it as the ‘cheating game’. But when he realized that his was the only documentary evidence of poker, he chose to give it the name ‘poker’. The origin of the word ‘poker’ is contradictory. Some say that is has been derived from the French ‘poque’ or the German ‘pochen’. Some even say that it has been derived from the Indian word ‘pukka’. Another possible explanation is that the word has been derived from the slang word ‘poke’, a term used for pickpockets. In spite of the uncertainty of it’s origins it cannot be denied that poker is one of the most widely played card games in the world.

The 5 Card Draw, the 7 Card Stud and the Texas Hold ‘Em are the three games which are dominating the present poker scene. The World Series of Poker is the most prestigious event of the game and it attracts players from all around the world. Poker is a game that has and will continue to charm people for it’s simplicity. People will continue winning more money and wearing more crowns as they continue to play poker.
