The popular game of bingo evolved from the sixteenth century Italian lottery. The simple game is easy to learn and play and is a game of luck and chance, as all lotto family games are. There is no playing skill or strategy involved in any way. There is no way in which the player can influence the outcome of the game. The outcome depends on the draw of the numbers. If the player is lucky, she has the ticket with the winning numbers and wins.

The mechanics of play are simple. A number is selected in an independent and random manner and is announced. Players check their tickets and mark the number. The first player to complete the announced pattern wins the game.

The game of bingo can be based on seventy five numbers or on ninety numbers. The ninety number version is known as the British version and is played in the United Kingdom, Australia and Ireland. The game is played on a rectangular ticket of nine columns and three rows with five numbers on each line. The completion of one line is considered a regular bingo. Two and three line games are special games with the three lines game being the coverall known as house or housie. In land based play the tickets are sold in books and are color coded for the different games.

The seventy five number version is known as the American version. It is played on a square card that has five columns and five rows and has one letter of the word 'bingo' over each of the columns. The free space in the middle of the "N" column can be used in the completion of any pattern that involves it. A regular bingo is achieved when a horizontal, vertical or diagonal line is completed. Some house rules consider the four corners as a regular bingo. Special games usually involve patterns and these can be any shape, number or letter.

The mechanics of play are the same for each version and many online bingo site offer both versions for the enjoyment of their players. There are a variety of game variations that can be played and these also differ from site to site. Whatever the version, players find the game to be a relaxing form of entertainment.

More information about the games and activities at the various bingo establishments can be found at a good informational bingo portal.
