When we speak about starting “from scratch” it means that you start your poker career without any financial investments. It is possible because practically all poker rooms organize freerolls regularly. Freerolls are advertised tournaments without any buy-ins, which instead offer real money prizes. As a rule, there are many participants in these tournaments. They also have a rather small prize-winning fund. Many people think they just waste their time playing freerolls and would rather start playing with a small sum of money. Some would partially agree with this point of view as it is based on logic, but there is an important reason to start playing with no money down. It is easy for a player to become too entrenched in the game. A player may come to realize that poker is not his game, if he has a tremendous losing streak. It can extremely negatively affect his future life.

Freeroll

The buy-in, or initial fee, of a freeroll is zero. Though, it is important to discuss the effectiveness of a buy-in based on the amount. To calculate this, it is necessary to divide the prize fund by the number of players.

Freeroll Profitability

D> 0.25 - very high

D - 0.20 - 0.25 - high

D - 0.15 - 0.20 - good

D < 0.10 - 0.15 - average

D - 0.05 - 0.10 - low

D < 0.05 - very low

As you can see, it is more profitable to play freeroll with a prize fund of $100 and 250 participants than a $300 freeroll with 3,000 participants.

It is very hard to win a good prize, meaning no less than $10, in a freeroll. It doesn’t happen very often. To increase your chance of winning in a freeroll, you should play as many freerolls as possible. If you follow this advice, the money will come rolling in. Keep in mind that, with a positive attitude and a desire to improve, you will likely increase your skill level within a few weeks. By utilizing this strategy, you will likely earn your starting capital and be ready to play micro limits cash games (i.e. playing for real money). After you have succeeded in winning money on a freeroll, try your hand at a low-limit cash game. You may feel more secure if you increase your winnings that way. Don’t try to save more money for starting your play on cash. As the practice shows, such approach is more long-term and harder psychologically. Most likely, you will lose your first money. There are not many lucky men who managed not to lose all their money after the first freeroll.

It is strongly recommended to those who start with freerolls to install as many poker room client programs which hold freerolls as possible. Then, look through the tournament’s schedule and try to play as often as possible. If more than one freerolls are being played simultaneously, it is possible to play two at once. It is not recommended to play more than two freeroll games at a time if you’re just starting out. It may spoil the quality of your game. Choosing the most profitable tournaments, instead of playing several at one time is the best strategy. In the event that two freerolls are occurring at one time with highly differing degrees of profitability, it is best to choose just one, even if you think that you can manage two tables.

The first thing to remember before playing is to learn the strategy of freeroll games. Then read the material again after you get some experience at a table. This way you will better understand the theory.

It is important to stay focused while playing freerolls. This may be difficult because your contenders often play poorly and freely. Keeping a serious attitude in any kind of poker games will help you develop a sense of discipline. Discipline is the key to success for the majority of poker winners.

Now you can take your first steps to mastering the game of poker.

We wish you luck!
