Online Poker: Skill or ChanceSubmitted by David Salt Thu, 28 May 2009
Money can be made playing online poker! One online poker champ won £115,000 playing 400 opponents over 13 hours. He maintains that there is an element of chance involved in poker, either in person or online, but he no doubt had the skill to win.
Most poker players will admit that chance and skill play a part in any winning hand. As with any game of cards, luck is involved, as you never know what hand you will be dealt. But about 20% is chance and 80% is skill in any winning hand to create the odds in your favour. The famous poker face also plays a role. You could have the best possible hand and lose because you have given away your position. This is where skill comes in. By knowing your game and having the skill to play it, you increase your odds considerably. In person, this may play a larger roll in the game. However, more and more online poker sites have the ability to allow players to see one another. Face to face games tend to play much slower. Online games have a quicker pace, especially those playing without seeing one another. But, habits form even online and players tend to observe their opponents. Skill is the ability to read other players, not only the cards. Much research has been done on the skill versus chance involved in online poker. It has been found that there are two types of skill: assessing the chances of the cards and the bluffing skill; this is a complex game. Working out the probability of the cards is just one small part of the game. So, one might ponder if the rush of the game is diminished online. No. The same excitement can be had online as in a face to face game. In fact, you may assemble a poker network and play with your mates online for the same thrill, and the same money. It's the same game of skill and chance and you may be the winner this week. So log on, pick your game and have a go! About the Author
