The aim of this article is to highlight some of the important differences between popular traditional national lottery games and the world famous El Gordo.

In a conventional lotto game a player is generally required to select a series of numbers from a specific number range as well as an additional bonus number. For example, in the UK lottery a player has to choose 6 main numbers from 1-49 inclusive and then a further bonus number from the same range. To win the jackpot, a player needs to match all of their six main selected numbers with those numbers drawn. If there is no single ticket matching all the drawn numbers in a given week, the top prize is rolled over to the following week growing in size as it does so.

The December El Gordo draw is significantly different in this area; there are a maximum number of tickets printed for this draw and due to this, winners are guaranteed in every draw.

The cost of buying a complete El Gordo ticket (Billete) is also very different from acquiring a ticket in a normal lottery game, like the UK National lottery. Acquiring a ticket for a single UK draw costs a British inhabitant just 1 pound. El Gordo tickets will, on the other hand, set you back 200 Euros each. Owing to the significant cost of participating in this lotto game, entire tickets are broken down into ten parts (Decimos) costing a more reasonable 20 Euros. It is therefore quite common for groups of friends or family members to divide the cost of an entire El Gordo lottery ticket in order to make the game a more feasible proposition.

In the UK National lottery a miniscule percentage of individuals ever win considerable amounts of money, with the majority left disappointed every week. The El Gordo lotto on the other hand gives that winning experience to a much larger percentage of individuals. In the 2006 El Gordo Spanish lottery draw, 3 million Euros were paid out to each of the 180 winning billetes. In the El Gordo draw of 2005, the winning number was sold in the town of Vic in Catalonia (population 37,825), whose inhabitants scooped approximately 500 million Euros.

The El Gordo lottery also delivers considerably better odds of picking up a cash win compared to that of the UK National lottery; with the El Gordo you have a very nice 1 in 6 chance of securing a cash prize compared to 1 in 52 when partaking in the UK lotto.

When playing lottery games such as the UK National lotto, extra lottery tickets are made available every time a pound is spent meaning that tickets never run out for any of the weekly draws. The El Gordo lotto is vastly different because only a certain amount of tickets are ever printed and once they are all sold no more will become available.

The Elgordo not only generates huge excitement in its native Spain but now all over the world due to the ever increasing quantity of web-based lottery ticket sales agents. It is therefore very important that you pick up your desired number of tickets as soon as they are released, to avoid disappointment.
