Guide to Money Line Sports BettingSubmitted by David Salt Mon, 5 Oct 2009
Sports betting has a little bit of everything to keep everyone's interest. Numerous types of sports bets can be made every day or even more sporting events. Many perceive this sports betting as something complicated. That can be true for some types of sports bets. However, one type of sports bet that is rather easy to understand is that of the money line bet.
Some types of sports betting are not conducive to the structure of some sports while being super for others. Money line bets are one such type that cannot be used for every type of sporting event. Those sports that do not rely on points spreads for sports betting using money lines. Some sports where you might see a money line is baseball, football, hockey, auto racing and more. You might wonder, why these sports? Consider the final score in these competitions. They can often remain fairly low when compared to the scores in some other sports. Therefore, there is not much of a spread that happens. This makes it a challenge for bookmakers to set odds with little variance in the points spread. So, instead bookmakers would establish a money line. When placing a money line wager, you need to know that what matters is which team will win. The wager does not take into account the final score of the sports competition. When preparing to place a money line bet, it is important to be able to read the money line. The team favoured to win will be assigned a value in terms of a negative number. The underdog team would have a positive value. Let's illustrate a money line bet example from football. For an impending game between Liverpool and Chelsea, the money line might show Chelsea as -140 and Liverpool as +120. Chelsea would be the favourite in this game while Liverpool is the underdog. If you place your bet on Chelsea, the favourite, then you would need to wager 140 pounds and should you win you would receive 120 pounds. On the other hand, if your bet is on Liverpool, the underdog, then you would need to wager 120 pounds but would receive 140 if you win. This example illustrates the value that exists when betting on the underdog team. About the Author
