Without a doubt, there is a wide variety to the sports played throughout the world. Many of these sporting events have become popular culture for the world's citizens. Along with these sports comes another activity which is sports betting. Many people like to make wagers on the results or other aspects of these sporting events, whether they are a fan of the sport or not. Given the variety of the sports, the bets that can be made on these events are varied as well. Most people believe the only sports bets focus on the victor in the sporting competition. However, this is not the case. Many sports bets are more intricate and focus on more aspects. When delving into sports betting, it is a good idea to know the different between some of the many sport bets. After all, you are betting your hard earned money!

A commonly made sports bet is a straight bet. Perhaps the most popular, when placing a straight bet you will make your wager on one of the teams in the competition. Prior to the event, oddsmakers will establish a point spread. When reading the point spread, the favourite team will be indicated with a negative sign while the underdog will be indicated with a positive sign. Studying the point spreads will assist you in determining the specific wager you want to make. The point spreads established helped even out the betting field, otherwise, the only wagers would be placed on the favourite.

Another sort of sports bet is the over and under bet. With this sports bet, you are concerned with the combined total score from the competition, not who wins. Over and under bets do not use point spreads. This has led some gamblers to feel that they are a much simpler wager to make. Bookmakers will determine a projected combined total score. This number sometimes will include a decimal, which makes a tie impossible. When you place an over and under sports bet, you will bet on whether the actual final score will be over or under the specified score set by the bookmakers.
