How to Successfully Bet on Horse Racing

Submitted by David Salt

One of the keys to becoming a successful horse racing punter is to understand how other people place their bets. Most punters do not use a specific system - instead, they bet based on tips or advice from family and friends. They may even just be betting based on the name of the horse or the jersey colour of the jockey! And when a punter wins they usually chalk it up to dumb luck.

Believe it or not, there are strategic ways to bet. The most important thing to know is when to place a bet and when not to. Yes, this sounds simple, but most horse racing enthusiasts overlook the most simple things. One way to control your betting is to set up a betting bank for yourself. Yes, this means setting up a separate budget or account that you use exclusively for betting. This will keep you out of financial trouble and will keep you less reliant on luck or hunches. With a separate account you will think of betting as more of a business and less of a lucky hobby.

Also, do not bet on emotions or hunches. This is called panic betting and it can be quite destructive. You need to control your betting and your emotions, not the other way around. Everyone has off days, but if you've started to lose, step back and re-evaluate your strategy instead of betting out of desperation. Additionally, do not start betting on many different horses or races at once thinking that at least one of your bets will win. This is not smart betting and will lose you more than you win. You need to strategise and consider every individual bet - only then will you be in control of winning.

The last piece of advice for horse race betting you should take is to not rush into things. A lot of tipsters will tell you to jump into it right away and to take advantage of beginner's luck. It is much smarter to research the sport, the horses, and the jockeys first. Good luck!
