Learn to Break

Submitted by Kleyev
Mon, 4 Aug 2008

I started breaking when I was 6 years old. Back then everyone was into it so it wasn't a strange thing to do. It was the early 80's and we danced a lot to old school hip hop. Back then though I didn't think of it as hip hop. It was just dance. When I listened to Eazy E that felt more like hip hop, besides an Alfonzo break dancing kit we didn't have all the dance supplies and breakdance videos you can find at bboy stuff. We just made up most of our own moves besides the robot and windwills. Power movers weren't as cool and powerful as they were today. I used to have a cool breakdance mix names robot vengeance, it was great and we probably listened to that mix 50 times a day.
Eventually we got good by practicing hours a day for years I started learning to do halos and headspins fluidly. Then I got into wrestling were I starting learning backflips. I eventually came to the point were I could smack my head on the ground and barley could feel it. Now I'm pretty much numb, I can't jump in almost any direction and headspin for hours if I wanted without getting dizzy. I have my own breakdance supplies shop were I sell breakdance videos and breakdance mix. If you ever need breakdance supplies check out Bboy stuff. You can find all types learning materials you will need and also all kinds of unique dance supplies. It will be tough at first but you will eventually become a beast on the dance floor.
I recommend first learning six step methods. These will be an excellent workout and you will build excellent agility that way; also learning to balance yourself on your hands. This will help you develop you balance and these 2 skills are essential to becoming a better breaker. Once you begin to master these 2 skills attempt to do a windmill or 2. This may hurt your shoulders at first and you will probably bruise badly, if you don't keep practicing till they do. You wont get any better if you don't practice and that's the key. You'll go thru a series of suckiness until someday it just happends and you will be enlightend from it. If you wan't to get really good though you have to get out and dance with other people. All the practice in the world wont make you anybetter if you don't get out and battle.

Rive Darkly is a dancer who has break danced all his life. He enjoys showing people how to break as well.
