There are several important points to consider before hiring a home theater installer. You must do your homework before employing one since you have likely spent a lot of money on your brand new flat screen plasma or LCD. Many people like the idea of installing it themselves, especially to save on money, but it is always worth the extra cost of getting it done by professionals. They will install it correctly for you, hide the wires, test the setup, calibrate it and so on. In addition, many installation companies also offer repair and maintenance services which means a complete support system for your home theater. Here's what to look for in your installer.

The first thing to look at is the installer's official status. The installation company should be licensed, bonded and insured so that you do not suffer any setbacks in case anything goes wrong. They should be officially registered with some kind of service or business government office, like the Better Business Bureau or Central Contractor Registration. They should have documentation at hand, and on their website, as proof that they are formally registered.

Also check the above offices to see if the installation company has a record of any complaints. That won't always be a litmus test but it is normally a good indication of the company's business ethic. In fact, probably the best way to get a grasp on how good or bad the installer is by asking around within your social circle as well as from past clients of a company who have had home theaters installed by them. Word-of-mouth, especially from people you know and trust, is often the most reliable way to tell how good a company's work is.

You're also going to be interested in how the company conducts itself. Are its employees well turned out, courteous and responsible? Does the company bad mouth other companies - or even clients! - in the locale? Is their website organized and neat or an eyesore? What about their office; does it seem freshly painted, regularly cleaned and so on? All these things, what you would term ‘appearances', give away a lot about the company and the kind of work you're likely to expect from them.

Lastly, you need to look at what kind of services they're offering and what charges they have for specific services. For instance, if they are charging for a simple on-site consultation then you need to reconsider hiring them. A professional, reputable home theater installer will offer suggestions, advice and provide a quote free of cost. This is because they know their installation work and customer service is good enough to make them the big bucks. They should also be putting their promises in writing, in the form of some kind of contract or another that clearly lists the details of the installation work being done.

If your home theater installer of choice meets the above criteria, then you are good to go. Barring all else, trust your intuition. Most people get an immediate sense of whether a company is good or not or if there is something ‘wrong' about a setup, however minor, and you should trust this sense.
